Kim Kyu Jong (24) from group SS501 embarks on his solo path.
Kim Kyu Jong recently made a comeback with title song 'YESTERDAY', a medium tempo dance song in his mini album, produced by composer Han Sang Won who also composed SS501's hit song 'U R Man'. Since SS501 members, Park Jung Min, Kim Hyung Jun, Heo Young Saeng and Kim Hyun Joong have all released their solo albums respectively prior to this, Kim Kyu Jong was the latest member to begin his solo activity.
- Amongst the members, as the last member to release solo album, was not impatient.
In fact, I did not have plans to produce an album within this year. If i was given chance, I hope to try out as an actor in musicals (Kim Kyu Jong participated in the musical 'Goong' and took on the role of Prince Shin) and also in dramas before I become active as an singer again. Then one day, my agency's president found the current title song for album and came to me. He said "This song is really good" He suggested that i give it a try and resume my activities as singer. I liked the song too so agreed readily and everything happened.
- After leaving SS501, don't you feel the burden despite being alone on stage.
I grew up (matured). In the past, I have members with me to fill up the stage. But now I have to do it alone right from the beginning till the end. Talked to the choreography team hyungs a lot regarding the stage. When I was in SS501, I had the cute image but we agreed that now I should present a more mature and masculine appearance. Therefore, we are using the suspenders as props as we showcase the dance. It gives off a retro yet stylish feel.
- Which of the other member's solo album do you particularly like?
Personally I like Hyung Jun's album the most. Hyung Jun originally has sense in music. And because I like songs with pop style, Hyung Jun's album has the style that is similar to what i like.
- Heo Young Saeng who was from the same agency as you did a rap featuring in your song 'My Love'. In SS501, Heo Young Saeng was a lead vocalist. Having him featured in rapping was unusual.
Young Saeng has always like rapping. I have seen him rapped when we go to NoRaeBang (Karaoke) and thought he was pretty good. He can do Outsider's speed rapping well too…. I requested to Young Saeng Hyung "Help me with the rap featuring" , but he was concerned about "Do both of us sound good together?".
- What is the focusing point of releasing the solo album?
Worried a lot about the title song. How do we keep up with the current trend. Also, if the genre will suit and if it will be popular in overseas. I want a song of my own. Wanted a song that is dreamy yet have a manly style that people will remember it. Like Top Singer Tommy Page, his songs are the style that i want.
- The member which you have been in contact with.
Since Jung Min is having activities in Taiwan, I haven't been able to keep in contact with him. If time permits, I want to act in Taiwan too. Hahaha. I met Hyung Jun recently and he heard my album too. Hyun Joong hyung is preparing for his 2nd album as well and he also asked me to monitor him.
- Were you reminded of the SS501's days?
Of course i think of it. Whenever I see Super Junior or other idol groups who were doing activities as the same time as we do in the past singing on TV.
- Plans of getting back together
If between members there is an opportunity next year, we also wish that we can do it together for once. Only if we can clear the busy schedules then we can do that…
- Enjoyed yourself in musical
I enjoy myself but I tend to always worry that i might make mistakes. So I often pray at night. Haha.
- SS501 had the reputation of Hallyu Star. Plans to promote overseas as solo artiste.
I will be holding my first fan meeting in Japan next month. Firstly, i will promote as singer in Korea. I also wish to show myself more and be more active as an actor in overseas. I should be doing various overseas promotion some time next year.

Singer and actor Kim Hyun Joong cast off his tough and charismatic image and made a comeback with an image of a mischievous gambler. Kim Hyun Joong released his second mini album entitled “Lucky” on October 11, and it was different from his first solo album entitled “Break Down” by utilizing a funky band sound.
Kim Hyun Joong gave an interview at Coex Intercontinental Hotel on October 10, and he said, “I have wanted to present music that has a reversal. Many people seemed to expect that I would release music that would be similar to my previous album ‘Break Down,’ and I think that I successfully provided a reversal in light of that. People will evaluate my album, but I personally want to give 100 points to my album as I had put my utmost efforts into create this album.” He revealed that he was satisfied with his album. He continued, “I think that I have to play music that my fans and ordinary people can enjoy. ‘Break Down’ was not a kind of music that people will pay to download the songs, but I thought that people might be able to enjoy the new album while watching and listening to the songs. This time, I focused on music that everybody can pleasantly sing along to.” The album “Lucky” contains a total of five songs including funky rock music with the up tempo track “Lucky Guy,” which is based on the sound of his band, a funky rock-and-roll track entitled “Do You Like That?” the ballad song entitled “I Am Your Man,” and a song with lovely lyrics entitled “U.” Kim Hyun Joong is highly interested in band music, and he came up with the idea of creating “band music that can be listened to while dancing.” Members of the rock band “Day Break” and the funk soul band “Common Ground” participated in playing the music.
Kim had presented the image of a tough man with his previous album “Break Down,” but this time, he had to create the image of a “preppy guy” who is stylish and mischievous, so he tried to lose weight and successfully lost five kilograms by exercising. Kim Hyun Joong emphasized his new image by saying, “I wanted to create popular and stylish music. And when I had been agonizing over how to present a freewheeling image, I happened to watch the movie ‘Ocean’s Eleven,’ and I thought ‘This is it’ because it looked so cool to me. The concert tour will begin from November 9 in Osaka, and he will also hold a concert in the cities of Japan including Tokyo, Nagoya, Sendai, and Yokohama with a total of 30,000 audience members. Kim Hyun Joong said, “I feel sad that I have to finish activities in Korea after such a short schedule as the schedule for my concert tour in Japan had already been organized. Kim revealed his plan to release another album at around the end of next year and to hold a concert. Asked whether he feels any difficulties due to his tight schedule and plans, he answered, “I always say that I want to take a break. But I found out that I could not actually take a break even though I have time. One week of break seems to be the maximum period for me. I took a break for one month before I moved to a different agency last year, and I became totally dejected at that time. I felt pressure and I wanted to do something at that time.” He reportedly already made plans for his next two years, and he personally revealed that he had already thought about the concept for his next album that will be released next year in January from the moment when he debuted. In addition, he does not want to have a relationship because he has been so busy with his work. He seldom watches TV. He said, “There are only two programs that I watch — ‘The Expert of Life’ and ‘VJ Special Forces’ — and I like those programs very much. I have realized that there are many mysterious people in the world and I want to focus on only one thing to become an expert like those people.”
Kim has continued to hold activities since his debut as a member of the idol group SS501 in 2005, and asked what has changed, he answered, “I was young when I debuted, and I was just happy about becoming an entertainer. But now I have become more attached to my job than before. I always think that I have to be fully prepared for my performances. In addition, I learned how to form relationships with other people. I should not be satisfied with my present position because it will hinder my own development. Kim KyuJong is an entertainer in his 7th year of debut, who talks softly and always replying with “No” when being praised. He is a polite and modest person who will greet people with extreme courtesy even more than a 90 degrees bow, and being a member of an idol group, he somehow had a boring style.
Debuted on 8-Jun-2005, Kim KyuJong, a member of group SS501. DSP Media, who produced 1st generation idol Sechskies and Fin.K.L, came out with SS501 targeting at Dong Bang Shin Gi. Actually in SS501, Kim KyuJong is not a member with distinct existence. Even when he attends variety programs with the other members, instead of standing in front, Kim KyuJong would be standing behind the members smiling good-naturedly. He debuted for 7 years, and returned with his solo album ‘TURN ME ON’ in 2011.
Among the 5 members, Kim KyuJong is the latest to make a solo comeback, thus making fans’ yearnings even more. The aim of this album is making known to people about entertainer ‘Kim KyuJong’, it is the foremost priority than anything else, we met with him for a talk.

The last among the members to make your comeback, seems like you have an unusual determination.
It’s a coincidence. I thought that YoungSaeng hyung would be the first to come out but then JungMin prepared even faster. In fact, I originally didn’t have any plans for album this year. I wanted to gather with people I like and make a R&B, Hip Hop crew instead of a solo album. But my company representative said this isn’t the time yet. Title song ‘YESTERDAY’ was a song which YoungSaeng hyung even finished recording for it. But they felt it isn’t suitable for YoungSaeng hyung, and after voting, the song came to me.
So is it right to say that you had wanted this song originally?
No. Definitely not. (laughs) I told YoungSaeng hyung that I will do away with this song. I said I will look for other demo. It wasn’t anything at all when I first listened to it. Haha. But I am singing it now?
I thought it was tacky when I first heard it.
Isn’t it? The more I listen to it, the more I grow to like it. The song will definitely feel better when it gets colder and you listen to it while putting on the ear phone and walking around. Which is why I am considering to stretch the activities this time to a longer period. I plan to go more to other cities and work hard in letting people know this song as well as me before I go to Japan for the musical activities.
The song is about asking for return after breakup, what type of person are you when you’re in love?
I am not someone who will ask for her to return. Because I think that trust is the most important thing in a relationship between two people. I will break up with her right away if one bad thing happened, even if she treats me very well usually.
Just one bad thing and break up right away?
If she is cheating on me, I will be very disappointed and so will do that (break up). I don’t quarrel in love relationship. I am someone who will think positively to what I perceive.
It is the style which frustrates females the most.
That’s why I guess I can’t be in love. (laugh)
Surprised that your activity period is long. Other members had short activity period.
Because of musical schedules, I can’t attend to filming for variety programs. It is a great pity because I would be able to let people know of my song while appearing in variety programs. The broadcast is 1 week after filming, so it is too late to coincide with the album release date. I don’t hold the desire to get number 1 position, I just want to go on with the activities for a long time. It is a great pity because everyone’s activity period is really short compared to the amount of practices they have put in.
Are there any programs that are already scheduled?
I have first recording for ‘ShikShin Road’. Even though I am not a regular cast, the director and JunHa-hyung takes good care of me, so I wanted to attend again. It is a program which is the most enjoyable while filming.
Seems like it is the most exciting program you have filmed.
I really like eating. Hyung will put down their spoon when ‘cut’ is heard, but I really ate until the very end. Thanks to it, I put on a lot of weight. And so I was really stressed too.
Introducing the GopChang (beef intestine) restaurant that you frequent, it has become a place of attraction among the fans.
Actually, the place where I frequent sells beef intestines a bit expensive. I went there quite some time after the broadcast, the boss asked why I didn’t go there for such a long time, and that HyungJun went there frequently with his mother. (laughs) I didn’t go there frequently because I feel that it is expensive, and when I really crave for it, then I will go with what I’ve saved up. Haha.
“Musical, in fact I hated very much to do it in the beginning.”
How was it when you debuted in musical with musical ‘Goong’? Don’t you feel like an outsider?
Not at all. In fact, I hated to do the musical because of that point. So in the beginning for about a week or so, I didn’t eat with them. I was showing my awkwardness for nothing. I thought they will leave me out. But it wasn’t the case. On the contrary, I heard that the other actors/actresses felt that I was being difficult. Because I am someone whom they only see on TV but is here with them. Living together for about a month in Kyoto, we became close to each other. Hyungs will have a drink while giving me guidance on acting, and also gave me a lot of advices. We also went on a MT (membership training) to CheongPyeong a while ago. I even paid the membership fee for manager hyungs and brought them along. It would be great if all of us can go for the Tokyo performance but I guess it would be difficult so it’s really a pity.
How about Kang DongHo who joined the group much later?
Not just DongHo hyung, please be good to all the hyungs. If you look at YooJun (Jang YooJun, actor who acts as Lee Yul in musical ‘Goong’) and me, please feel extremely good. Looking at both of us while we are eating, hyungs would go “Feels pleased if I look at KyuJong, I want to teach YooJun(?)”. Haha
In the release of the scene, KyuJong is the person who got the first kiss of Choi YeSeul.
(Quite seriously) Actually I am really curious. Is that real? YeSeul is actually quite talented. She dances, sings and acts well. Her character is also bright and bubbly. Initially she was extremely shy, but in the ending scene in the Kyoto performance, she jumped and kissed me. It should have ended beautifully like in a comic but it didn’t so it was fun. (laughs)
“Made mistake in musical stage, returned home and cried terribly.”
Watched the performance before our interview. Was it a mistake in the middle of performance? Too mischievous?
No. (Kim KyuJong shook his head violently and replied) It really wasn’t a joke that day. I was only concerned with my own part, so I didn’t know. After the performance, when we gathered and talked, everyone told me I made a mistake. I was really ashamed and said, “I guess I shouldn’t take up Tokyo performance”, but surprisingly there are many people who made mistakes. Jung DongHwa hyung said that was his first mistake in his life. (laugh) The performance was in fact nothing in particular but seems like the atmosphere was by far the best among the performances. I returned home and really cried hard. Because it was really a failure, the seniors who performed together told me that the more the body is tired, the more you have to relax and do it. In the next day’s performance, I relaxed and felt the difference. It’s a pity. Why did you watch the performance on that day. (laugh)

Kim KyuJong “Ever considered quit being an artist”
SS501 put a temporary stop to their group activities since their last stage together on the 13th June 2010 Newton TV showcase. After which Kim HyunJoong, Kim HyungJun and Park JungMin, these 3 members signed up with new agencies, leaving Kim KyuJong and Heo YoungSaeng who did not find an agency easily. This caused much worries amongst fans until they subsequently signed up with B2M Entertainment and had a series of successful Asia Tour fan. But the wait for more than a year is indeed a long wait for his fans. So what had happened to the Center of SS501 who had become a mysterious character during this long absence?
“Ever considered quitting, hence had no desire to go on”
What was done during the long rest? Seems like a long long rest..
When our contracts expired, following the settlement of fellow members, I did consider quitting. I was seriously considering this option. It was my dream since I was young, to become an idol singer, and that has been fulfilled. I spent a good 5 years time in a good place, receiving good treatments. At the same time, there were many people whom I thought was bad because of misunderstanding and also a lot of occasion where I thought they are good people but turned out to be otherwise. I was hurt many times. Hence I thought of quitting, returning to my hometown and start something new with my friends or go back to school. At that time, the people whom I am working with now, hold on to me. A couple of composer hyungs whom I’m close with, taught me ways to have fun working, they even bought me musical equipments, and gave me lots of good advices. As such, I made music, learned to draw and 4 months passed quickly. (slimz1808 : WOW! Din noe wuri kyu learnt drawing..next time FanMeet he can draw pic of fans?!)
Almost starred in dramas during your rest?
I received proposals for ‘Mary is Staying Out’ and ‘Secret Garden’ at the same time. Seems like in ‘Mary is Staying Out’, the role of a member of a band suits me exceptionally well. But I do not have any regrets. Well of course, when would I ever have the chance to star along with Hyun Bin and Ha JiWon. Ha Ha. Really wished to meet them and was very excited but I felt I was lacking in many areas then. If I had taken up the drama then, the success of the drama would make me feel like it is my success. Then others will have the impression ‘So you are this kind of person’.
People around you were impatient about the long absence
I’m really fine but fans were really worried (slimz1808 : OMG! How can we not be worried, reading these articles made us even MORE worried. Imagine he ever considered resigning?!). Many even called the company asking ‘What exactly is Kim KyuJong doing’. Ha Ha.

Did you recover your confidence during your rest?
I overcame my fears from my involvement in Goong. I also went for some drama auditions for the experience of it, but it still felt like my heart was about to burst when I read the scripts.
How are things now?
I’m not nervous now. For this album performance, I only felt slight nervousness for my debut stage on Mcountdown. After starring in Goong, I have developed such thinking “ah, can’t bother, just do according to what I think it should be”. In the past I had always been burdened by the thoughts of “Is this the correct answer, if I do this, what if others do not like what I have done?”.
Hope to be looking forward to the upcoming drama that you are casted in. (Kim KyuJong has been casted in TV ChoSeon’s drama ‘Saving Madame Go BongShil)
Truthfully, I am relieved that my role is not a comparatively huge one. However it’s my first drama, so I want to do well for it. My parts should be starting from episodes 7-8 onwards and will be on one scene each time. My role is a chic city guy who dreams to be a musical actor.

Actually looking at KyuJong, we think that he seems to lack of self-confidence. Have you ever been pushed over by fans?
(slimz1808 : haizzz…poor boys) It was very severe. Ever since our debut, in fact we heard many times from fans that YoungSaeng hyung and I should be excluded from the group before the group can succeed. I also received a lot of letters too. I drank a lot with YoungSaeng hyung back then. (laughs) Both of us chatted over drink and talked about everything and anything, and said ‘next time we must laugh while talking about this day’, and those days, we had our concert in Tokyo. At the ending of the concert, we sang “Wings of the World” and both of us burst out crying. At that time, members held on tightly to me and gave me lots of strength. It is a fact that the public’s awareness of entertainer Kim KyuJong is not high
I want to let the public know about me now. Even when I take taxi, the taxi driver would only repeatedly say that they’ve seen me somewhere before. Even if I tell them the group name, they don’t really know. In times like this, if I say HyunJoong hyung’s name, the taxi driver would go ‘ah~’, and recognizes. Ha Ha.
It is good that members are doing well but as a member of the group, I felt sorry that I am unable to keep up with the level of recognition. There is really only one aim for my album and drama this time.
It is for the public to ‘know Kim KyuJong’. That’s why I will be going other cities more often too. To let them listen more of my song. (laugh)
